Create a programme for youth delegates.

One of the main priorities of the UN youth agenda is youth participation in decision-making. Including young people as delegates in a nation's official delegation to the UN General Assembly and other Economic and Social Council functional commissions is one way that young people can participate in the UN.

The UN Programme on Youth is in charge of overseeing the youth delegate programme globally, while Member States are in charge of establishing youth delegate programmes at the national level and selecting the youth representatives for their nations.

The responsibilities of a youth representative differ from nation to nation, but they typically involve offering advice to their delegation on matters pertaining to youth and taking part in meetings and unofficial discussions as part of their delegation's overall work.

At the UN, youth delegates are able to take part in a number of intergovernmental sessions. While some formal young representatives also attend the Economic and Social Council's functional commissions, the majority of them take part in the General Assembly.

Representatives of Youth to the General Assembly

The General Assembly's Third Committee is responsible for discussing social, cultural, and humanitarian issues. The agenda item "Social development, including questions relating to the world social situation and to youth, ageing, persons with disabilities, and other special issues" currently covers matters that are specifically related to youth.

The Third Committee of the General Assembly typically considers this agenda item in October, though this could vary depending on the yearly work plans that Member States approve. The General Assembly's website often has the agenda for the assembly, including that of its Third Committee, by late summer.

Commission for Social Development (CSocD) Youth Delegates

A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the Commission for Social Development. This group, which meets yearly in February for one and a half weeks, is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the World Summit for Social Development's Programme of Action and Copenhagen Declaration.

It addresses important subjects in social development, including employment, poverty, and social integration, of which youth issues are a part.

Every two years, a youth resolution is customarily adopted. Since the work of the two organisations is closely related, the youth delegates who have been chosen for the General Assembly typically also take part in the Commission for Social Development.

The Commission for Social Development's agenda is accessible.
